How many nights on the boat?
One night is ideal for most travellers. The novelty is strongest in the first evening and morning. Two nights suits only those who genuinely want to do nothing at all.
Alleppey or Kumarakom?
Alleppey has wider canals and more traffic, which some find lively and others find crowded. Kumarakom is quieter and better for birdwatching.
What to check before booking
Ask for the boat registration, whether the air conditioner runs all night or only from 9 PM, and whether the boat actually cruises or stays anchored. These three questions separate a good houseboat from a disappointing one.
